Aboriginal Fathers Love Their Children Too!

This study of Indigenous fathers and grandfathers who had children involved with child and family services, was conducted in 2014 for Creating Hope Society, a group in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada that has worked for many years to improve the ways that this system interacts with Aboriginal families. The purpose of the study was to identify barriers that exist for Aboriginal fathers and father-figures when communicating with child and family services, a ministry of the Government of Alberta.

For Indigenous fathers to have better success as parents, child and family services must take steps to “…reverse the assumptions of racism and assimilation that still shape and constrain Aboriginal life chances….To bring about this fundamental change, Canadians need to understand that Aboriginal people are nations… political and cultural groups with values and life ways distinct from other Canadians.”
