Understanding the refugee experience

In 2017, the AUMA’s Welcoming and Inclusive Communities Initiative hosted a webinar on “Understanding the Refugee Experience” in recognition of March 21st, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Using experiences from Syrian refugees, guest speakers Kaitlin Lauridsen, from the Centre for Race and Culture, and Niga Jalal, from the Multicultural Health Brokers Cooperative, highlighted pre-migration experiences, the journey to Canada, pillars of mental health adaptation and common myths about financial assistance and other issues surrounding refugees.
